Collection: What Lies Beneath Collection

The central theme of this painting series explores the idea that in nature, humans, animals, and plants are all made up of multiple layers. While we usually see only the surface, the underlying layers profoundly influence what appears on the outside. This concept can be interpreted literally — for example, slicing through an onion — or more abstractly, in the sense that each person is the sum of their experiences. Our hidden layers, whether positive or negative, shape who we are.

To physically express the concept of multiple layers, I deliberately painted over older, unresolved works. In these new paintings, elements of the original surface remain partially visible, offering a glimpse into the artwork’s soul. The underlying structure often guides the development of the uppermost layer, transforming what once seemed incomplete into a hidden source of strength. In this way, the earlier painting becomes a foundation, supporting the journey toward the final composition.
